Exterior Insulation Finish Systems (EIFS)
EIFS (often pronounced ee-fiss) is the acronym for exterior insulated finishing system and is a wall system for non-load bearing exterior walls. It’s a system where an insulation board is used in the construction of a wall with several compound layers that are often finished with acrylic stucco. The definition from Wikipedia states it is “a non-load bearing, exterior wall cladding system that consists of an insulation board attached either adhesively or mechanically, or both, to the substrate; an integrally reinforced base coat; and a textured protective finish coat.”
EIFS walls control moisture and heat. They can significantly improve the lifespan of a structure with highly efficient insulation properties. It has drainage properties and highly effective moisture control properties. The components are often a water proof barrier, EPS foam, and a colourfast acrylic polymer or stucco finish.
EIFS as a construction method has amassed a lot of attention over the past decade as being the number one exterior construction method used by architects, engineers, contractors, and specification writers. Have a look at the EIFS Council of Canada.
It’s one of the most well tested and researched cladding systems in industry today. EIFS is in full compliance with building codes and has significant energy conservation advantages. It’s better for the planet as well as your heating and cooling bills. If the quality of your internal air is important to you, a well installed EIFS system creates a near-perfect envelope or pocket giving you full control.
